TheRedPath
is
an educational Aboriginal-specific model that teaches
practitioners in all health and wellness programs the
crucial importance of emotional health. TheRedPath
model
can easily be integrated into existing health and wellness
programs to ensure their success.
TheRedPath
also
has its own 28-day intervention program, blending clinical
and cultural approaches that offer techniques to cultivate a
healthy mind, body and spirit. The skills learned by the
practitioners and participants alike will continue to
develop and flourish over time.
Peggy
Shaughnessy, President and Founder of Whitepath Consulting,
initially developed TheRedPath
when
her research revealed an urgent need for Aboriginal-specific
programs in Canada’s penitentiaries.
TheRedPath
was
developed as a pilot program and initiated in several
federal correctional facilities.
As
a result of TheRedPath’s
success with high-risk populations (offenders in federal
penitentiaries), a training manual was developed to enable
practitioners, counsellors and frontline workers to adapt
this model within their own communities.
TheRedPath
can
be easily integrated into existing programs. It has
proven to be effective not only for intervention and
reintegration, but also for prevention. This innovative
program has the potential to support success in existing
programs dealing with substance abuse, family violence,
employability, suicide prevention and general health and
wellness. For example, the Government of Manitoba
(Human Development) used TheRedPath
among
frontline workers in the Cree community and was so impressed
with the program that it has been adapted for use within its
youth crime prevention programs.
TheRedPath
offers a choice to Aboriginal
peoples, a new direction when none seems available.
Canada’s history of Aboriginal criminality, mistreatment
in residential schools, suicide and failing child welfare
system has created a deficit in Aboriginal emotional health.
TheRedPath
was developed with the goal of
blending clinical and cultural approaches to facilitate
participants’ personal development in terms of physical,
emotional, psychological, and spiritual well being. TheRedPath
model incorporates key Aboriginal
concepts - Circle, Creativity, Balance and Ceremony – to
develop psychological mindedness, emotional understanding,
emotional control and mindfulness. It successfully trains
participants to balance all aspects of their lives, making
for happy, healthy individuals capable of making a positive
contribution to their communities.
