HOW DO I THINK? ------------WHERE AM I GOING?
  • Choice—realization—alternatives—begin expressing emotions—Balance—repetition, modeling and traditional teachings
  • Residential schools, incarceration, assimilation, child welfare system, etc.

The ability to tolerate stress is defined by an ability to actively cope with stressful situations and anxiety-provoking conditions without becoming completely overwhelmed.  The ability to control one’s impulses is defined as an ability to regulate one’s emotions by resisting or delaying an impulse, and controlling hostile, aggressive, and irresponsible behavior.

  • We are exposed to or experience a multitude of stressors.  These might include daily stressors such as fears and anxieties related to school and interpersonal interactions, or major psychological and biological stressors such as loss of a parent, trauma, and illnesses or disabilities.  More specifically these stressors may include; family stressors, peer stressors, academic stressors, intimacy stressors (breaking up with a partner), and network stressors (dealing with a friend’s emotional problems).
  • Childhood and adolescent stress has been related to both medical and psychological outcomes.  Those who experience stress have more visits to the doctor, more chronic illnesses, and they experience more sick days from school/work.  In addition, stress has been associated with behavioral problems and poor school performance, poor work performance, low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.
